Gentil Gentile

When we moved to Beverly, some five years ago, had you said the town would become a meccas for craft brewing, you would have been greeted by a raised eyebrow. Yet, five years on, and Beverly has blossomed into being one of the leading lights in the North Shore brewing community.

Founded by Paul and Christine Gentile, in 2015, it’s the epitome of a true English pub. Forget the pies, tacky mirrors and bad pub quizzes, and instead think of stripped back pine, no tvs, solid furniture, kids racing around at high speed and dogs happily snaffling on a variety of usually pilfered salami. In short, think of conversation instead of segregation.

Beer is all brewed on site and it’s done with a subtle difference. While most brewers amp up their IPA to their hoppiest and highest ABV, Paul keeps things at a Truer 4-5% ABV. And the result is perfect because it creates ‘session beers’. Beer that you can drink several pints and still walk out unaided!

The selection is also broad - usually with 8-10 beers on tap at any one time, and often a true cask ale on the counter. The recent English Beer was without a doubt, the best example I’ve tasted in my ten years a Boston resident.

Customers seem to agree, and it’s fast becoming a community hub as well. From local running clubs, to mums groups, locals come each week. There’s even a rotating gallery of local artists and food delivery services.

Head there soon, and pull up a bar stool and do what all good pubs should do. Watch the world go by.
