Unexpected Exceptional Economy
I’m confused. Really confused. I know the order of things in the landscape of SPG hotels. I know the difference between bargain price and diamond class hotels. And I know the hierarchy of brands.
So how is that a bargain hotel brand, usually my choice for airport hotels, producing a property that is by many standards exceptional.
Let me introduce you to the Aloft, in downtown Chicago. And get ready for a shock.
The exterior provides no surprises. A typical, even bland modern building with standard signage. And the first few steps inside do nothing to change your perception of all other Aloft - a low cost, modern styled, atmospheric hotel. But then things start to change. The communal area to the right has a stunningly decent pool table. And then turn left and you're met with Beatrix - the restaurant that's so popular is has a even ending trail of people swinging by to get their orders to go.
I spent two days sitting at this bar from morning to night, working there are some meeting were cancelled - and I'm taken aback. Exceptional bar tending throughout the day with just the right level of chat and attentiveness, without being over powering. And then there's the food. The avocado toast was hands down the best I've ever eaten. By some distance. And the Enlightened Ceasar Salad did exactly that. Just magnificent.
So, next time you're staying in Chicago, try out a place that at $155 per night is the best value, most enjoyable and best located hotel in town.
Don't let the world take you. Take The World.
