Best. Day. Ever
One of the things that set us on our road of #taketheworld was the realization that you can map your vacations to the festivals that take place in each city. I mean, why wouldn't you want to visit when each city is at its peak celebration?
And so that's why we mapped our visit to Chiang Mai as the epicenter for the worlds largest water fight. The festival takes place across 3 days starting the 13th to the 15th with sporadic outbursts the night of the 12th. So first tip is, if you're coming in from the airport, don't a car or taxi service that's exposed at the back because resellers can and will jump into your mode of transports and happily pour water over you. The main fun runs the 13th and 14th and then on the last day becomes more family focused.
We stayed at the U Hotel (separate post) which was the perfect location for being in the Old Town and had the main parades go right past the front door. In fact a good strategic position was taken up in their Drink bar allowing us to soak confused bystanders from an arial attack.
Key to Songkran is also realizing that this is all about happiness. Try this even in the US and there would scuffles. Here it's just endless happy people, many a few sheets to the wind, but all of them happy.
Other tips to help would be to wear a rashy or top that dries fast and to bring your own super soakers. For $10 on Amazon we bought really good but nice and small blasters which outgunned those being sold on the streets by about double the distance.
Have fun people.
